
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 c. crumbled dry bread
- 1 T. butter
- 2/3 c. sugar
- 1/2 t. vanilla extract
- 1 egg
- 3 c. scalded milk
Directions
- Combine crumbs and milk; bring to boiling point.
- Add butter and stir into the egg and sugar beaten lightly in the pudding dish.
- Flavor with vanilla.
- Surround the dish with hot water and bake in a moderate oven (350 F) until knife comes out clean when inserted (about 45 min.+). To make Chocolate Bread Pudding, increase sugar to 1 cup and add 2 ounces chocolate, melted (or 2 T. cocoa). Source: Ida Bailey Allen’s “Modern Cook Book” (1924, pp. 588-589)
